Our Approach to Therapy
At the ApaCenter, we believe the foundation for change in therapy is the relationship. Through forming a strong therapeutic alliance, we partner with you in the change process. We believe that you already possess many strengths, resources, and resiliencies, although some of these you might not fully recognize or appreciate! Part of our work in therapy is to help you identity your strengths and capitalize upon them.
In addition to our compassionate care, we use evidence-based practices in our therapy. This means that the therapy approaches that we use have been shown to be effective in well-controlled studies as well as in the real world. We don’t want to waste anyone’s time or money. We know that you are looking for results. So, that’s why we believe in using evidence-based practices. Some of the approaches that we use include:
- Feedback-Informed Treatment
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy
- Solution-oriented therapy
- Interpersonal therapy
- Positive psychology
No matter what technique or model that we use in therapy, the alliance (or relationship) is always the foundation. So, we adjust the way we work to ensure that you are getting what you want. In essence, we try to be therapist that you need us to be in order to achieve your goals. For instance, some people want a very directive therapist. They want someone who provides advice, feedback, and strategies. Other clients just might want a “sounding board.” They are mainly seeking a safe place to explore issues and concerns. Using an approach known as Feedback Informed Treatment, we monitor your progress and solicit your feedback so that we can adjust the way we work to best meet your needs.
Does Therapy Work?
The short-answer is: YES! Research indicates that people who receive therapy are better off than 80% of people with similar levels of problems who don’t receive therapy. But not all approaches to therapy and therapists are alike. The foundation for change is forming a strong alliance so that we can work collaboratively to achieve your goals. Within the context of this strong alliance, we use evidence-based practices that are adjusted to meet your particular needs.
Studies also show that therapy is superior to medication treatments in many respects. For instance, therapy tends to lower the likelihood of problems recurring. In effect, you learn tools to help you manage problems that arise so they aren’t so challenging. Also, therapy doesn’t have the side effects that often accompany medication, such as weight gain, decreased libido, fatigue, and nausea.
Who Are Our Clients?
We see clients of all ages, including young children, teens, and adults. We provide therapy to individuals, couples, and families. We also offer parent consultation, which is particularly helpful when it comes to parenting young children.
